RACHEL MEI ORVIS
Painting and Portraiture
A BIT ABOUT MY WORK
My work centers on portraiture and the emotional presence of people I know closely, especially friends and loved ones. Drawing inspiration from comics, traditional painting, and Art Nouveau, I use exaggerated color and expressive linework to capture both likeness and personality.
I primarily work in mixed media, beginning with a saturated underpainting and building contrast through India ink linework. From there, I layer vibrant color to create paintings that feel alive, drawing influence from artists like Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Valley, and Hope Gangloff.
Honest portrayal is central to my process. I’m interested in preserving moments of connection and documenting people in ways that feel genuine to who they are. More than anything, my goal is to create work that captures the essence, energy, and personality.
